ParticipantEverything in the course so far has been about “men in magic”. All the examples are male magicians. All the participants in the course are male. I notice the word “guys” is used frequently in the classroom.
There are a lot of women in magic too, and not to include them in the course would be an injustice. Also, the emphasis on male performers is unlikely to encourage women to get involved in courses (and in magic) in the future.
Is it possible to give some prominence in the course to women in magic? The character studies would be a great place, for example. Thanks!

JackKeymasterHey Mark, this is an ideal chance for you to suggest a couple of your favourites. We do actually have a couple of women in the line up for the character studies already but more than happy to add more if they fit the topics!
Women in magic are often side-lined to the status of assistant and as quite a lot of the course is focused on foundational stuff, women aren’t in the literature to teach from. But I certainly admire Laura London, Fay Presto and of course Debbie McGee (who performed as a magician herself) to name a few, so they are referenced.

ParticipantGreat! Thanks Jack. Carisa Hendrix aka Lucy Darling would make a good character study. And she’s Canadian :) I’ve seen a couple of her virtual shows, she was on Fool Us, and I believe she is performing at the IBM 2021 virtual convention.

JackKeymasterShe’s already on my list Mark :) she talks a bit about performing with a character in her Fool Us VT. My plan is to put her with Handsome Jack, another character performer, and possibly Morgan and West at the same time, in a couple of weeks to create a discussion around actual characterisation and acting in magic.

ParticipantHi All
I’ve seen a few female magicians perform over the years including Romany, Jade, Alexandra Duvivier, Anna De Guzman – all excellent performers in their chosen fields. Anna is young but has serious chops.
And of course Julie Eng, who works with David Ben at Magicana, is an excellent magician in her own right. Interestingly she billed herself at one point as a ‘magicienne’ – she may still do.
I have also had the opportunity to see Lucy Darling perform a couple of years ago – although, while she is admired both in terms of skill and character, her performance didn’t quite resonate with me for some reason.
And, FWIW, I don’t see any issue with using the term ‘guys’ in class if the class consists of, erm, guys. However only my opinion.
Cheers
Andrew
