JackKeymasterWhat’s your favourite close up performance on Penn & Teller’s performance? Cards or not.
I became a big fan of Javi Benitez after seeing him on P&T. Here’s the first performance he took to the show. You can see how nervous he is!

ParticipantMy personal favourite is Kostya Kimlat. Here is the video. Penn is so busy getting mad that he fails to see what’s going on. So much so, that (at around 3:20) he forgets he hasn’t even selected a card yet!! :)

Andy CostiganParticipantHere’s a great interview with Michael Close who works behind the scenes on Penn & Teller. He gets on to the show around 12m40s in… how to get on, the nature of magic on television, what he does to prepare the acts for the show etc.

JackKeymasterKostya is great although I don’t believe he fooled them with this, given that he published it 10 years ago and anyone interested in cards in the slightest would know about this effect. I also don’t think David Roth fooled them when he was on, I don’t do coins at all and I could see everything he was doing. They’re just big names in magic and these guys are saying “we admire you” rather than “you fooled us”.
Andy, that podcast sounds interesting I’ll take a look. I’ve had an opportunity to chat with a couple of guys who have been on it, and it’s very different now its a US show as opposed to when it was a UK show. The fooling part is no longer the point, and now magicians can opt to go on but state they aren’t intending to try and fool P&T and it’s basically a big marketing thing. Which I think is really cool :-)

ParticipantI agree that there are some performances on FU that certainly wouldn’t fool P&T given they are likely to be at least familiar with the work of the better known magicians.
They certainly know Mac King, who occasionally stands in for Teller at the Rio in Las Vegas.
Piff the Magic Dragon works with P&T regularly, as does John Lovick/Handsome Jack.
Some favourite FU performances?
Unshuffled – Paul Gertner
Boris Wild
Jon Archer
to name but a few.
Cheers

JackKeymasterCan you share a video or two of them Andrew so we don’t have to search them out?
I prefer Gertner’s Steel Cups and Balls, it’s always been a favourite thanks to the audio element the ball bearings add. Unfortunately it’s not on YouTube anymore.

JackKeymasterBank Night is a great routine and John well deserved to fool them with that.

ParticipantWhat I enjoyed most was a conversation some of us (not in this group) had reconstructing this routine.
