JackKeymasterThis weeks’ two performance studies are huge influences on my work and my magic. I have been lucky enough to spend time with each of them and they are hugely generous and passionate performers. And very kind people at the same time.
The reason I enjoy these two so much is they perform magic as if they are creating the magic right at that moment- it doesn’t feel rehearsed or learned, but instead it feels like they feel this skill is an art that is beautiful and they want to share that beauty with others.

ParticipantI enjoyed these performances the most of any so far in the character studies. I found Kiko’s just a little slow at times whereas Hannibal held my attention throughout. I would like to emulate just about every element of Hannibal’s performance.
They both use storytelling very effectively – where, for the most part, the magic is a metaphor for the story (e.g. coins for memories). Their performances are exactly that – performances – rather than a string of magic tricks. The magic carries with it a sense of purpose or meaning.
Their use of language is natural – especially Hannibal’s. They are playing for wonder. There is not much movement but the movement is careful and deliberate. Nothing seems hurried. Misdirection is provided by the narrative and use of their gaze.
Hannibal’s performance had more variation and an overarching narrative, and it was also very personal.
To quote something I read in an article on beauty in art – “Beauty is what you make of it, what your preference is, what calls to your heart, soul and mind.”
