ParticipantI think the name of the routine for this exercise is “Travelers In Time” from Complete Walton V1 vs “Back In Time” that is in V2?

ParticipantAs a clarification question; We’ve covered a lot of things in discussions that haven’t been officially “taught” yet in the course. Are they items we shouldn’t use in this routine exercise? (things like the DL, etc.)

Leonard MillerParticipantI think what Jack was saying Saturday he was wanting us to break the trick down from just watching the video example
Move 1 > Move 2 > Move 3 > etc.
Then create your own trick that can mimic the same effect using any move or gaff that you have in your repertoire as long as the effect can be explained the same at least that’s how I understood it - August 28, 2021 at 1:21 pm #1199

JackKeymasterLeonard’s description is exactly the intention. Build your own version of this effect using methods you already know. They don’t have to be what we have taught you yet, and we’re not going to give you guidance on what to use. The goal is to develop your own handling that can be described as the same effect overall.
In terms of the name of the effect, the effect is published under both names:
- Travellers in Time in Cardboard Charades (Which is in Vol. 1)
- Back Into Time in Omerta in 2001 – this is likely a confusion of the name.
Back Into Time as described in Vol 2. is a different effect and was first published in the The Pallbearers Review.
Using the Complete Works of Roy Walton as the canonical name, you are correct in that this effect should be credited as Travellers in Time. Thanks for the catch.
That said, giving the reference wasn’t so that everyone could look up the method – the challenge is to create your own without knowing for sure exactly how it was done.

ParticipantOh well – here goes…
I’d like to extend my apologies to a Double Lift that was slightly injured during this routine – it is currently doing well and recovering at home.
Cheers

Leonard MillerParticipantWell the journey thus far has been a rough one I started out strong but by day 6 the effect that I created was so far off track from the original I had to restart with new ideas though 2 decks did not make it through the practice but their memory will live on. I am back on track now even though preforming live will be a challenge but looking forward to watching everyone’s effects only 2 more days left to practice!! ( I will try to get a video uploaded as back up by Friday)

<div dir=”ltr”>Potential Handling copy and pasted from EMAILS sent last week – last half was sent first.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>2nd email</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>P.S. my handling is not up to making a video but I thought of using <b>5 blank facers</b> + <b>a deck of cards</b> for an informal close up setting -</div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”><b>• 1 card</b> is off to the side face down with the following written on it</div>
<div dir=”ltr”><b> “Restore to Original Order by doing Nothing”</b></div>
<div dir=”ltr”> (magic excepted)</div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”><b>• 4 cards</b> are shuffled face down using the initial shuffle that’s in Roy Walton’s Near Enough</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>that leaves them in the following order -</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>1) <b>Separate the Reds & Blacks into piles </b> 2) <b>Cut each pile in half, turn one half over and Riffle into each other</b></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>3) <b>Cut each pile in half, turn one half over and Riffle into each other</b></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>4) <b>Turn over the top card and place on the bottom</b></div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>The shuffle is not drawn attention to but is used to make it appear they are mixed in any order.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>Cards are then turned over one by one & the operations are performed as per explanation below.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>The Card off to the side is then revealed and <b>”Ta Dah”</b> the Top Cards are turned over and seen to be <b>Back</b>, Cards underneath are all <b>Face Down</b></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>and when turned over and spread are shown to be <b>Mixed</b>.</div>

<div dir=”ltr”>hi Eddie and Jack,</div>

<div>
<div class=”yiv7753106963ydp5f0aa70byiv5780556784ydp6aa61e00yahoo-style-wrap” dir=”ltr”>
<div dir=”ltr”>In case my skills aren’t up to making a recording I’d like to summarise the moves for how I think this beautiful trick is performed.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>First up I’d like to say I thoroughly enjoyed the performance Jack, and had no idea how to do it other than thinking there was a relation to Triumph. Mostly I figured out what’s needed by working backwards from the situation at <b>3m30s</b> :-</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>- a pile with a black card face up on top</div>
<div>- a pile with a red card face up on top</div>
<div></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>To turn over the face up card and place it on the bottom, and then start the time reversal requires another face up card immediately below the top card with all the other cards face down and <b>already mixed</b>. Now a <b>double lift and turnover</b> allows a card to be placed on the bottom & the marker card to be revealed as having returned.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>How to achieve this – the cards face down & mixed?</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>(because we can watch the trick over and over, any misdirection is negated and the first thing I noticed was a pass [turnover?] at <b>2m45s</b>)</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>We need red and black cards in each of the separate piles after the cards are gathered up and divided in half again. Experimenting with what a pass could achieve, I hit on the idea of transposing half the black cards to sandwich all the red cards and create this structure -</div>
<div dir=”ltr”><b>13 black/26 red/13 black</b></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>then dividing the deck in half leaves two face up piles with this structure <b>13B/13R</b> & <b>13R/13B</b></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>Then I realised I needed to know where to get a break in the black half of the whole deck spread (<b>2m38s</b>) and how would I get a break?</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>I was stumped so I went back to the video and eventually spotted the injog of 13 blacks at <b>2m40s</b>. Then it took me some more time to realise that the best time to identify the card to put your thumb on for the injog was while separating the reds and blacks (<b>14th card</b>).</div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>(<b>the hardest part for me</b>)</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>The apparent Black pile is almost cut in half (riffling up the back allows us to let <b>1B</b> cover <b>13R</b>) &</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>we have <b>13R1B</b> flipped over and riffled into <b>12B</b> with <b>2B</b> (from the <b>12B</b>) held back & landing on top.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>Then the <b>10B</b> which weren’t on top need to be stripped out by the opposite hand, flipped and riffled back into <b><span style=”color: #e4ac64;”>1B13R</span>2B</b></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>leaving a mixture of <span style=”color: #e4ac64;”><b>11B</b></span> & <b><span style=”color: #e4ac64;”>13R</span></b> all face down and <b>2B</b> again held back face up on top. (I’ve used the brown colour to indicate “face down”)</div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>Repeat for the apparent Red pile.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>This is the structure of the situation at <b>3m30s</b>. The remainder of the trick unfolds easily from here on.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”></div>
<div dir=”ltr”>I had lots of fun trying to figure this out and I may not have it all. Had to come back to it a few times over a good number of hours (with pen and paper & cards)</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>My card handling is lagging behind what I know. To strip out 10 cards with the opposite hand while transfering the top 2 at the same time is beyond me at the moment.</div>
<div dir=”ltr”>regards,</div>
